Chapter 1
Mimi Lockhart stood in front of the mirror attempting to create a sense of elegance. This was going to be such a special evening for her that she wanted every hair to be in its perfect place. As she gazed at the finished product, her mind traveled to the person who had helped her regain her spirit; Shawn Brady.
He had been there for her for as long as she could remember and over the years her high school crush had turned into an incredible friendship. But over the past few months, their care and respect for each other turned their relationship into a new and exciting direction. Mimi smiled as her fingers traveled slowly over lips while she recalled the recent kiss he had given her. Returning her attention to the mirror, she sighed, “Shawn, you’ve made me happy again.”
Her face beamed as she turned away, “Hey, Shawn. Are you ready yet?” She peered out of her room hoping to catch the look on his face when he saw the new outfit she had purchased days earlier. He wasn’t in her view. Again, she said louder, “Shawn?” Her body slowly moved out of the door. “Where did you go?” She searched the entire apartment and even opened the door to his room. “Shawn, this isn’t funny. Are you in here?” With no answer she stepped in and scanned his room. Empty. “Okay. He had to go get something. I’m sure there is a reason why he isn’t here.” Quietly she waited in the living room for him to return.
Several minutes passed before the door opened, and he flew inside. His eyes flew directly to her and his mouth curved upward showing his heart-warming smile. “Mimi, you look…” his voice cracked, “..beautiful.”
She circled around so he could get the entire affect. “I was hoping you would like it.”
“Like it?” He stated. “I love it.” The dress she had picked showed not only her exquisite taste but also made her incredibly sexy. His hands immediately pulled her in for a small lingering kiss. She sighed and closed the small gap between them.
“I missed you.” Her voice whispered as he gently pulled away. “Where did you go?”
Shawn fidgeted and maneuvered away from her. He shoved his hands in his pockets and stuttered, “I….I, well, I was with Belle.”
“Is she okay?” Mimi asked; not sure she liked where this conversation was headed. He had a look of uncertainty on his face and Mimi immediately recognized that Belle was manipulating him again.
“I’m not sure. She says that she needs me to help with the baby.” Shawn’s eyes looked downward. “Phil’s at some rehabilitation thing and something to do with medicine Lexi gave her.”
“And the nurse?” Mimi tried to remain calm. “Did the nurse just happen to have the night off?”
“I guess.” He hated disappointing Mimi. They had been planning this evening for two weeks.
“Of course everyone else she knows is busy and can’t come over, either, right?” Mimi retorted.
“I promise I’ll make it up to you. We can do this tomorrow night.” He rested his arms on her shoulders. “Please? I don’t know what else to do.”
Mimi hated when he looked at her with his puppy eyes, but she hated even more that Belle was meddling. “I think that this is one time, Belle should have to find someone else, Shawn. I’ve spent hours getting ready; we’ve been planning this for weeks.” Her foot thumped the floor out of frustration.
“I’m sorry. But I can’t say no.” His eyes darted back to the floor. “I can’t leave her alone.”
“No, Shawn, you mean you won’t.” Her heart was breaking and she didn’t want to hear anymore. She tried to fight back the tears, but they started to fall in front of him. He moved his hand to wipe them away, but she blocked it. “Don’t okay. Just go. Go over and take care of Precious Belle.” Her eyes closed and silently she walked away from him and headed toward her bedroom. Under her breath she whispered, “I guess I should have known you would always choose Belle.”
Inside her room, she sobbed into her pillow as she heard the ‘thud’ of the front door closing behind him. Her body trembled with pain as she wept for a man……one she had dreamed of, one that she had learned to put her trust in, and the one she had hoped would be there for her forever.
