She opened the door and wished away all of her problems. The reception area was empty. After a few minutes wait, she searched the office and came upon a voice. She knocked on the door and was awarded entry.
“Hi, I am looking for Mr. or Mrs. Collins.” She informed a striking woman who vaguely resembled Bonnie in a tone downed way.
“I’m sorry, but we are in the middle of changing lawyers. The Collins retired to Rhode Island. My son and his friend are going to take on their clients. I am so proud of him. He made junior partner at this big law firm in Dallas in only seven months, but he decide to come up here and open a practice.” The woman rambled on. After a moment, Mimi turned her out. Why is this woman telling me her son’s life history? Mimi thought.
The woman continued, “I don’t know if I am more proud of him now or when he was the top of his class in law school. I have to admit I thought he would go into construction, but law fits him better.”
Mimi nodded while frantically thinking of an excuse to leave. The lady paused. She stared at Mimi. That made Mimi grow a little uncomfortable.
“I understand if you don’t want me to know why you are here. I am not bound by attorney/client privileges, but I can keep a secret. You look so dreary like the life is out of you. What’s wrong?
Do I look that bad? She mentally went through a check list of her appearance. No makeup, hair pulled back, jeans and T-shirt. I must look horrible. Oh god please don’t let me. Dang, a tear.
One lonely tear graced her face. She was motioned to a chair. The lady left the room and brought back a glass of water.
“Here drink this.” Mimi reached for the glass.
“Thank You,” she took a sip. “I really should be going.”
“Nonsense. Now tell me what is making you cry.”
God, I am so pathetic. I am crying in front of complete stranger. It is time to grow a backbone Miriam Lockhart. Mimi thought.
The room remained quiet. Can I trust her? She probably wouldn’t understand. Even with the bland wardrobe, she looks like she comes from money, and I will not be pitied.
Adrienne looked at the distraught soul and knew that look. It was the same way she looked when her son was kidnapped all those years ago.
“Sweetie, unburden yourself. I am a neutral ear. You don’t have to tell me your name. By the way, I am Adrienne,” she offered her hand for Mimi to shake.
“You are right, It’s my son.”
“Oh god is he sick?”
“No, his father will not let me see him. He was suppose to be given up for adoption, but some how his father has him. I wasn’t in a clear state of mind when I signed my rights away. I did some research and that is enough to get him back. However, my son’s grandfather is rich and powerful and is known to buy a judge or two. I’m defenseless now, but not a quitter,” she declared before breaking out in tears. God she is turning into Belle, she thought.
Adrienne reached out and consoled her. Back and forth they rocked at the pace of a glider on a breezy spring day.
The door brushed opened. “Mother, did you find my flash drive?” He went straight to the desk at the center of the room not bothering to look in the corner at his mother.
Adrienne released Mimi and whispered her apologizes before walking over to the desk.
“Maybe, it was in your wallet,” guessed Adrienne. Mimi cupped her purse over her shoulder and stood to leave.
“That little pickpocket-” He abruptly stopped when he noticed Mimi trying to exit. “Who are you?” Mimi stopped. She remembered that voice. Oh my God, it couldn’t be. Life is so cruel. Maybe, I am mistaken. It has been a long day, she reasoned. “Are you deaf? Who are you?” his voice raised. She slowly turned around. His brown death glare pierced through her.
Adrienne noticed Mimi‘s discomfort. “Let’s not get hasty, Alex. You are scaring the girl.”
“I’m Miriam,” she hesitated for a moment before continuing. “I was looking for the Collins. I was informed that they have left so I will just go now. Thank you, Adrienne for your help.”
“You shouldn’t go. Alex can help you with your case.”
Mimi face turned cold.
“Are you scared Miss?” Alexander quickly noticed the change of expression.
“Actually, it is Mrs. Br-. Ms. would be fine. And no, I am not scared just unsure.” She attempted to exit the room again. Adrienne summoned her back. Adrienne stood in the middle of the room trying to think of her next step. She instantly took a liking to Miriam and wanted to help her. That required the best lawyer, and that was Alexander Kiriakis.
