Chapter 13
“She’s not answering her phone.” Shawn came into the bedroom, Mimi had only just woken. He smiled as he watched her awaken, watched the sleep slowly ebb from her eyes until her pupils focused on him in a way that let him know she was wide awake. The flash of anger that came into her eyes when she realised it wasn’t quite six o’clock yet.
“Shawn, don’t you think you’re taking this big brother role a bit too seriously? You haven’t even known for sure that she’s your sister for a full day. She’s probably already on her way to work. Come back to bed” She lifted the covers for him and patted the space beside her.
He shook his head, “No, she never went home last night. She could be in trouble.”
Mimi sat up, he wasn’t going to drop this till he knew where Victoria was, and that she was safe and sound. “Then she probably went to Max’s. I bet if you call him, she’ll be there.”
“You’re right.” He dialled the Max’s mobile.
Victoria answered. A very tired sounding Victoria, “Max’s phone, Victoria speaking.”
“Victoria, where the hell are you?”
“Dad?”
“No, Shawn.”
“Sorry, for a moment there you sounded like my father, he’s always demanding to know where I am. I’m with Max at the garage, he’s just popped out for some coffee and bagels, and pancakes for me. Is it about Mimi’s appointment? Because he knows you’ll be in late.”
“No, I just called to see if he knew where you were, I’ll see him at work later.” And he hung up, dropping the phone on the nightstand, before climbing back into bed. “You’ll be happy to know you were right, she’s with Max.”
Mimi snuggled against Shawn, they’d had a late night last night. Bo and Hope had wanted to know everything they knew about Victoria, and without revealing too much about how they’d met, they’d told them everything. Celeste had let slip something about the baby being okay before she and Lexie had left, but Shawn’s parents had been too distracted to take any notice. At least she hoped so, because she really wanted to be the one to tell them herself, when the time was right for such an announcement. Shawn and herself had agreed to hold it off until after the scheduled doctor’s appointment today. They’d get to find out if it was a boy or a girl and they were still undecided as to whether or not they actually wanted to know. They’d have to tell their families soon, it was going to become obvious pretty soon, in fact she was already beginning to show. “I told you she’d be with him, they’re probably doing the same thing we are.”
Shawn, only half listening, smiled as he pulled Mimi closer. Then it hit him, the full meaning of what she’d just said, jumping out of bed, he grabbed the nearest jacket. “They sure as hell better not be doing that.” Was all Mimi heard before the door slammed behind her husband. She shook her head and slid further under the covers, he really was taking this big brother role way too seriously.
“Believe it or not, it was for me.” She shook her head, remembering Shawn’s tone as he demanded to know where she was, “It was Shawn, he was checking up on me.”
“He’s really taking this big brother role seriously isn’t he?” Max handed her a cup of coffee, she breathed in the aroma. She loved the smell of coffee, especially this early in the morning. “They didn’t have pancakes, apparently they only start making them at seven, so you’ll have to settle for bagels.”
She shrugged, she hadn’t been in the mood for pancakes anyway, she’d just wanted a convenient excuse to have him leave, she’d needed to gather her thoughts. Last night had been…well, amazing seemed to general a way to describe it, out of this world, was a more accurate description. Despite what he had thought, she didn’t regret last night, but now she was sitting here wondering if perhaps he did.
He watched her sitting on the office desk wearing nothing but her jeans and the only clean shirt he’d had in the place, her hair more messed up than it usually was. He still couldn’t believe what had happened last night, that he had allowed it to happen. He’d wanted their first time together to be special, a perfectly planned out seduction when they’d both been ready, when she was ready because he’d been ready since the first day he’d seen her. But she hadn’t really given him a choice last night and instead they’d had to settle for the rough office wall and hard floor.
“I could talk to Shawn for you if you want, get him to ease up on the big brother act.”
“Thanks for the offer, but it’s really not necessary.”
He moved to stand between her legs, “Are you sure?”
She put her coffee down and placed her arms around his neck and smiled up at him, “It’s really great of you to offer, but I can handle Shawn.” Then her expression changed, became more serious.
“What’s bothering you?”
She shook her head, “It’s nothing, only…I think, I could be falling in love with you.”
He smiled at her, leaning closer. “Good, because I’m already halfway in love with you.” Before she could reply, in fact before she could even think of a reply, he had his lips on hers. She smiled against his lips, opening her mouth to deepen the kiss. They stayed that way for quite some time, totally engrossed in each other.
It was the, “That’s quite enough.” that came from the doorway that broke them apart. They both looked to the doorway to find Shawn standing there.
“Shawn, what are you doing here? I thought you were coming in late.”
“I was, still am. I just wanted to make sure that nothing, shall we say ‘inappropriate’ was going on here.”
Victoria burst out laughing. Sliding off the desk, she went in search of her shoes, “Inappropriate? Really Shawn, what do you mean by that? Are we talking a few kisses, some suggestive talk,” She slipped one sandal on and reached for the other, “or are we talking more serious stuff, like heavy petting or even, God forbid, sex?” she whispered the last word as though it was so inappropriate, it couldn’t be mentioned in public. “Because, if you worried about my virtue, you’re a bit late. About a year too late in fact.”
“I was worried that’s all, you disappeared last night and I haven’t been able to reach you. I thought something might’ve happened.”
“Well, I’m safe and sound and running late.” Glancing at the clock on the wall, she gasped, “I’ll have just enough time to grab a shower and change for work.” Swinging around, she kissed Max, just to irk Shawn. She finally broke away when her brother cleared his throat, “We still on for lunch later?”
Max, stunned at her behaviour, simply nodded as she walked to the door but before she could leave, Shawn grabbed her arm. “We need to talk.”
“Later, I’m going to be late for work.”
She tried to shrug him off, but he wouldn’t let go, “I’m sure Victor won’t mind his granddaughter being a bit late.”
She looked at him confused. “Granddaughter?”
“Yes, Victor Kiriakis is my grandfather, which makes him your grandfather.”
“Oh, well all the more reason not to be late. We can’t have people accusing him of nepotism now can we.” Still he didn’t release her arm, “My arm Shawn, I can’t leave without it.”
Max, who had been watching the exchange between the two other occupants very carefully, spoke up. “Why don’t you and Mimi join the two of us for lunch? You can have your talk then.”
Shawn didn’t say anything simply nodded and released his sister’s arm. Victoria hurried out, leaving the two men alone. They both watched her leave and when she was out of sight, Shawn sighed, he hadn’t gotten anything right with her. He’d played the protective big brother role way too seriously, he hadn’t even earned the right yet he was demanding to know where she was.
Watching him, Max knew what was going on in his nephew’s head.” Give her time. She’ll come around eventually. It’s a lot to swallow in one day, and she hasn’t even met the rest of the family yet. She’ll be fine.”
“I hope you’re right.”
